RIP: Liz Claiborne

Fashion loses another great this week, designer Liz Claiborne dies at 78, following a long battle with cancer.

She made her mark designing clothes a working woman could afford.

"Liz Claiborne's current portfolio includes more than 40 brands - from rapidly growing, hipster lines such as Juicy Couture to luxury names like Narciso Rodriguez and denim from Lucky Brand Jeans as well as moderate sportswear lines like Dana Buchman and Ellen Tracy - all in addition to the company's namesake label." -stuff.co.nz

A New Twist

Cocktail garnishes that instantly give classic drinks a fresh look and flavor:
1. Caper Berries - place on stem in a martini
2. Kumquats - half and muddle in the bottom of rock drinks for citrus flavor & aroma
3. Basil - muddle instead of mint for mojito
4. Flaming Orange Peel - squeeze colored side of peel toward open flame: oils will ignite, showering the cocktail with smoke and sparks.
5. Spicy Sugar - a cayenne-spiked sugar rim heats up sweet-tart cosmo-styled drinks
6. Crystalized Ginger - in a Jack & Ginger of Moscow Mule
7. Lemongrass - place stalk in gin & tonic
8. Brandied Cherries - instead of maraschinos
9. Colored Salt - makes for a more vivid salted rim on margarita

9. 2 The Sky - Robin Thicke
10. Unsuffer Me - Lucinda Williams

Did You Know?
Lucinda Williams West tour played to Portland last night at the Crystal Ballroom. She's amazing, worth going to see everytime she comes to town.

Interesting comment on a new track, 'Unsuffer Me', Lucinda scoffed at the popular media conception that it was yet another unrequited love song, not so, she wrote the song about self-enlightenment. It's live performance was the most powerful I've seen in a long time. "Almost like a prayer," she avowed when it was over.

Other random highlights: a dalliance into some classic Door's and the dismissal of an old missionary school lesson, "You can't petition God with prayer."

London 2012 Brand & Vision Launched

+ + + + +
"The new emblem is dynamic, modern and flexible. It will work with new technology and across traditional and new media networks."

Watch the Brand in Action
(Update: 6/6/07 - the video was removed after it was reported it triggered epileptic fits in suffers of photosensitive epilepsy)

- - - - -
"The London 2012 design has been described as a disfigured swastika, an arrangement of beer mats, a window kicked in by a football, a graffiti tag, a toileting monkey and a scribbled joke."

"The symbol cost around £400,000 and took one year for design company Wolff Olins to think up."

Public opinion: Discontent
